Overview of Photo Metadata

Fulcrum supports standard EXIF metadata (Exchangeable Image File Format) captured by the mobile device's camera. This data is recorded alongside the image file when a photo is collected within a Fulcrum photo field.

When viewing your data in the Fulcrum record editor, clicking on a photo thumbnail opens an image viewer overlay that displays a quick summary of the metadata being used for that image.

Key Metadata Captured

The specific metadata captured includes

  • Geotags (Location): This includes the latitude, longitude, and often the altitude where the photo was taken.

  • Other Details: Standard camera information such as timestamp, camera make/model, orientation, and exposure details.

Photo Geotags vs. Record Location

Photos in Fulcrum are geotagged independently of the overall record's location. This feature provides a high degree of detail for data verification and tracking:

  • Scenario: If a single record represents a large area (e.g., a plot of land) but multiple photos are taken while walking around that site, each photo will have its own precise location.

  • Visualization: In the record editor view, this distinction is visualized by overlaying the photo's location (often represented by a red ring) with the overall record's location (often a blue ring). This helps users pinpoint the exact location for every collected data point.

Accessing Photo Metadata

The full EXIF metadata table for each photo can be accessed when exporting your data:

  1. When running a data export from the Fulcrum web app.

  2. Choose the option to include photos in your export settings.

  3. The resulting export package will contain a separate data file (usually a CSV or similar format) detailing the full metadata table for every attached photo.
