It’s simple to build your own classification set using the online editor, but if you already have an extensive list of items, importing it into Fulcrum is easy as a CSV file.
Preparing a CSV for Import
You can structure your list inside of a spreadsheet to load in and automatically create a classification set. You will need to format the values in a CSV file. The classification set can nest items beneath one another, building a subsection picklist (a powerful feature for large standardized sets of options). You will need to have a separate column for each level of the classification set, indenting for each “sub-level”. In this example, it shows a list of species, with each sub-level indented by one cell:
Once you have your file formatted correctly, save it as a CSV file format. Go to the Fulcrum homepage, select Classification Sets in the navigation pane /sidebar on the left side.
Once on the classification set page, select Import Classification Set to upload your file.
Using Custom Values
You can also set custom values in your file as you’re prepping for import. To set the values for a classification set option, add the custom value in the cell to the right of each item. Using the same previous example, we’d use this format so the user sees the animal’s common name, but have Fulcrum store the scientific name:
When adding values to the imported data file, it is important to ignore the values when adding the next deep choice option. In the screenshot below you can see the Value for Frog, Anura, is in the same column as the choice options nested within the Frog choice option.
Notes
You want to make sure that there are no empty rows in the CSV file being imported. This will result in the import failing since the choice list importer attempts to create a choice option for every row in the CSV file. This includes empty rows at the end of the CSV file. In programs like Excel, make sure to delete the row/column and not just the data contained within the row/column.
