This article shows you how to install the AI Toolkit and connect Fulcrum MCP in Codex. Codex works with personal ChatGPT plans, including Plus, so it's a good option if you don't have a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace.

If you have a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace, see Setting up Fulcrum MCP and the AI Toolkit in ChatGPT instead.

Prerequisites

Installing the AI Toolkit

Installing the AI Toolkit in Codex takes two steps: first add the AI Toolkit source, then add the plugin.

  1. In your terminal, enter the following command to add the AI Toolkit source:

   codex plugin marketplace add fulcrumapp/fulcrum-ai-toolkit

2. Enter the following command to add the plugin:

   codex plugin add fulcrum-ai-toolkit@fulcrum-ai-toolkit

Expected outcome: The AI Toolkit appears in your list of installed plugins in Codex.

Saving your API token

Codex reads your API token from an environment variable on your computer rather than from the connection command. Enter the command for your operating system, replacing YOUR_FULCRUM_API_TOKEN with your API token.

Mac or Linux:

export FULCRUM_MCP_TOKEN=YOUR_FULCRUM_API_TOKEN

Windows (PowerShell):

$env:FULCRUM_MCP_TOKEN="YOUR_FULCRUM_API_TOKEN"

The command above only works until you close the terminal window. To save the token permanently, add the command to your shell profile (for example, ~/.zshrc on Mac), or set FULCRUM_MCP_TOKEN as a user environment variable in Windows.

Connecting Fulcrum MCP

Run these commands in the same terminal window where you saved your API token.

  1. Enter the following command. If your organization isn't hosted in the United States, replace the URL with your region's endpoint.

codex mcp add fulcrum-app --url https://mcp.fulcrumapp.com/ --bearer-token-env-var FULCRUM_MCP_TOKEN
  1. To confirm the connection, enter:

codex mcp list

Expected outcome: fulcrum-app appears in the list.

Testing the connection

Confirm that Codex can reach your organization.

  1. Start Codex.

  2. Enter: "How many apps are in my Fulcrum organization?"

Expected outcome: Codex uses Fulcrum MCP to look up your apps and answers with the number.
